Shape of Dreams Beginner Guide

Everything you need to know to start your first run in Shape of Dreams. Difficulty settings, controls, meta progression, class overview, and tips for clearing your first boss.

What is Shape of Dreams?

Shape of Dreams is an action roguelite with MOBA-style combat developed by Lizard Smoothie and published by NEOWIZ. You choose from nine unique Travelers, fight through procedurally generated dream worlds, collect and customize abilities called Memories, and socket Essences into your skills to reshape how they work. Runs last roughly 30 to 40 minutes, and you can play solo or with up to three friends in cross-platform co-op.

Choose your difficulty

Four difficulties are available from the start: Nap, Deep Sleep, Ominous Dream, and Nightmare. Nap has no meta-currency penalty, so there is no reason to start on a harder setting. Begin on Nap, learn the controls, unlock a few meta upgrades, and then progress upward. You can switch difficulty at any time between runs.

Understand the controls

The game supports both WASD movement and classic MOBA attack-move controls. You can switch between them in settings. Each Traveler has a primary ability, an ultimate, a passive, and a Dodge. Hold Control to zoom in on your loadout and rearrange hotkeys. Every skill can be augmented with Essences, which you socket directly into your Memories.

Meta progression and Stardust

Stardust is your persistent currency earned from completing runs. Spend it on four skill trees: Life (defensive), Destruction (offensive), Imagination (economy), and a character-specific tree. The first three trees are shared across all Travelers, while the character tree unlocks unique upgrades per Traveler. Prioritize Stardust upgrades early, as they make every subsequent run easier.

The run structure

Each run takes you through three regions with a boss at the end of each. The map uses a node-based system similar to Slay the Spire. You will encounter combat nodes, shops run by Jonas the spider, shrines for healing, wells for spending Dream Dust on upgrades, curse nodes for risk-reward choices, and Hunter nodes that increase in danger the longer you linger. Hunters slowly close in on your position, so keep moving toward the exit rather than farming every node.

Memories and Essences

Memories are abilities you find during runs. You can carry several at once and swap them at shops. Essences are gems you socket into Memories to change how they work. For example, an Essence might make your fire attack heal you or add cooldown reduction. Two identical Essences automatically fuse into a higher-quality version. Visit shops to buy new Memories and Essences, and use Dream Dust at wells to upgrade your current kit.

Tips for your first boss

Clear the area of smaller enemies before engaging the boss. Use your Dodge charges to avoid telegraphed attacks. Spend Dream Dust at the last well before the boss room to upgrade your strongest abilities. If you picked up curse modifiers, check whether they will hinder the boss fight. The boss drops a Soul that lets you upgrade one ability for free, plus Stardust for meta progression.
