Maximum player count
Shape of Dreams supports a maximum of 4 players in online co-op. You can play with 2, 3, or 4 players. The game does not have local split-screen co-op; all multiplayer is online. All content including Nightmare difficulty and Limbo is accessible regardless of team size.
Cross-platform play
Full cross-platform play is supported between Steam (PC), Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players on any platform can join the same lobby. Cross-play is enabled through in-game settings and requires all players to be on the same game version. Platform-specific friend lists and invite codes both work for forming groups.
Optimal team sizes
Two players: straightforward to coordinate, but you must cover all roles with fewer people. A tank and healer pair with flexible damage dealers works well. Three players: good balance of roles with one dedicated damage dealer supporting a tank and healer. Four players: maximum flexibility. You can run specialized builds since teammates cover your weaknesses. A full team with tank, healer, and two damage dealers is the most comfortable setup for Nightmare and Limbo.
Solo versus co-op differences
Enemy health does not scale as aggressively as in some roguelites, but more enemies appear on screen in larger teams. Meta currency rewards are individual, so each player earns their own Stardust. Memory and Essence drops are shared through the drop system. The map is shared, so all players move through the same nodes together.
